Depending on how far back in time you go, the Penny Tray will evoke different visions for everyone, but the memories will all centre on the same sweet-filled moments. Baking trays lined with wallpaper, coloured plastic or old wooden trays made from crates… all took their rightful place on the counter at the local corner shop, and all tempted the taste buds with brightly-coloured sugary sweets that delighted the eyes and pleased so many grateful tummies.

The contents of the Penny Tray were the ultimate penny prizes for sweet-toothed school children to savour and share with friends. They no longer needed to save their pocket money for a full quarter of glass-jarred treasures from behind the counter. Black Jacks and Fruit Salads, Fizzers and Parma Violets, Cola Bottles and Refreshers… You remember those sweets and your Penny Tray experience, don’t you? You can still picture and taste those sweets and feel the textures as they fizzed, melted and zinged…
